Hurricane Katrina Response
For those who are interested in helping domestic animals and wildlife that have been
left injured or homeless by Hurricane Katrina, the
Humane Society of the United States is
accepting donations at their website for their coordinated Disaster Response.
The Humane Society's Disaster Animal Response Teams have much experience in helping animals during natural disasters, and have
in their possession useful items such as their Disaster Response Unit (a four-wheel drive truck and 38-foot air-conditioned trailer with
rescue, sheltering, and communication equipment as well as pet food and supplies).
They have been working with local animal shelters to evacuate animals in the danger zone. In addition,
the HSUS has been coordinating with other voluntary
organizations through the Department of Homeland Security, the American Red Cross, and
the National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (National VOAD) which
comprises many faith-based and voluntary groups.
You can visit the Humane Society of the United
States website to learn more about what they are doing
and how you can help.
Also, the United Animal Nations organization in California has been allowed to enter the area to help. Their
Emergency Animal Rescue Service (EARS) is going down to provide aid. You can learn more
on their website.
And Noah's Wish in California is also on the scene. They are a group whose sole
purpose is to help animals in disaster situations. On their website, you can read their
reports from the scene and find out how to help.
