Blackwater NWR
9th Annual Youth Fishing Derby

Saturday, June 4, 2011
9:00am-12:00pm
In partnership with the Friends of Blackwater and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge will hold their 9th Annual Youth Fishing Derby on June 4, 2011 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. This "fun day of fishing" will be held at Hog Range Pond on Refuge property located off Route 335. Youths 15 years old and under can pre-register for the Derby by calling 410-901-6124, or beginning at 8:30 am on June 4 at the pond. Fishing will begin at 9:00 am and end at 12 noon. Bait and fishing rods and reels will be provided, or you can bring your own. The number of "loaner" fishing rods is limited, so it is recommended you bring your own if you have one. Experienced adults will be available to assist the young fishermen in catching his/her tricky fish.
Parents should note that this is a non-competitive, catch-and-release event, meant to introduce children to the fun of fishing. Each registered youth will receive a free t-shirt, a lunch ticket (hot dog, soda, and chips), a door prize ticket, and a bag of gifts. Last year 111 kids caught more than 160 fish!
In conjunction with the Fishing Derby, Blackwater will hold its 10th annual Frog Jumping Contest at 12:00 noon. If you wish to enter this event, bring your quickest jumping frog or toad to compete. Prizes will be awarded to first, second, and third quickest frog or toad.
Directions to Hog Range Pond from Route 50: Turn onto Route 16 West. Go approximately 7 miles to Church Creek. Turn left onto Route 335. Go approximately 5 miles. Turn at the second drive on the right past Key Wallace Drive, and follow the signs or directions to the pond. Alternative parking may be utilized if fields are wet.
