While remembering a century of conservation, it also seems like an
appropriate time to examine how we can do a better job of protecting
the refuges for future generations. The Refuge System currently has
a $2 billion backlog in operations and maintenance, and refuges
throughout the country are feeling the pressures of development and
pollution. Legislators who care about American conservation are trying to
draw attention to the needs of the Refuge System.
But what can you do to help the refuges today:
- Learn about the Refuge System and share what you've learned
- Visit your local refuge and learn about its special needs
- Volunteer at your local refuge
- Join a refuge Friends group
