2007 Eaglet-Naming Contest

The Friends of Blackwater are proud to announce the following winners in our 2007 Eaglet-Naming Contest.

Winners:

Martha Sadler from Annapolis, Maryland with the name Justice (for the oldest chick) and Deb Michalowski from Saylorsburg, Pennsylvania with the name Majesty (for the youngest chick).

Both Martha and Deb have been watching our cams for about a season. Martha has been to Blackwater Refuge once but hopes to make a visit again this summer. She lives on Ridout Creek where she has enjoyed watching the ospreys return each season around her home; she also enjoys watching the raptors on the Blackwater website. Deb, who is a frequent contributor to the Blackwater online galleries, says she has also enjoyed watching the eaglets blossom into such large, handsome birds.

Both Deb and Martha will receive an eagle prize from the Friends of Blackwater and also an eagle prize from the EagleMan Ironman Triathlon race directors, who were our honorary judges this year.

I wanted to mention that several other contest participants chose the winning names, but we can only award a prize to the person who first entered it on the contest entry page.

We had many creative choices this year, and it was hard to select just two. Some other good combinations were Screech and Talon, Del and Marva (for Delmarva Peninsula), and Luca and Hally (for the eagle's Latin name Leucocephalus Haliaeetus), as well as quite a few other interesting names. Hang on to your entries and you can use them again in a future chick-naming contest -- they might just win next year.

Congratulations to our winners! And much thanks to all our participants.
